  • Me

    Me

I have many names, faces, personalities
    A mother, a sister, a wife, a daughter
    I’m a lawyer, a teacher, a philosopher, a friend
    A human being.

Yes, I am a human being
    Just like anyone else
And I refuse to be treated
Like trash thrown on the street

    Enough of lies
The truth needs to be heard
And it’s better out in the open
Than after when it’s too late.

    Why should I cover up
What you think you don’t like
    Or perceive as negative
Just because someone else thinks so?

Sure, it won’t go down well
I will turn a few heads
    And make a few enemies
    But I will be right.

    I’m not going to change
    My ways because
    They make me unpopular
    Or they are unpleasant
    To the blinded eyes
    Of centuries of tradition
    Or boundaries of faith
    that border on fear
    I’m not going to act
    In a certain way
    Because society “frowns” upon it

    Why are you so afraid
To wake up and smell the coffee?
    Why should I change?
    Why should I
Let go of what makes me happy,
Or gives me a sense of contentment?
Just because it doesn’t fit in
    Your narrow frame of mind?

    I cannot, will not
    Change what I am
For this is what makes me

    Me.

  • X marks the spot

    X marks the spot

A slight chill teases the air
Behind a veil of silken mist
    Carelessly the trees they sway
    Dancing in the velvet breeze
Each moment ticks away so fast
Faster than your eyes may blink
Gorgeous, sparkling in the fire’s glow. I wonder
How they look so beautiful, so pretty
    In the meager light as I gaze upon them;
Just stare in amazement at your face,
    Knowing not how I’d spend
Life without you. Not even another
Moment need pass by without you by my side.

Needless, my words are now as my heart is
Open, my eyes connected with yours. I try to
Place my index finger on your
    Quivering lips; I know you
Realize what I’m about to do, as I
Show you this ring – I want to make you mine forever.

    Trembling, I hold your hand
Unsure of how you would react as I ask
Very slowly, if you’d marry me; each syllable making me
Weak in the knees. I watch your lips closely, right there –
    X marks the spot.

Yes! Validation at last as I see that beautiful smile
Zigzagging all over your face. One I love more than life itself.

    I’m on cloud nine.

  • One Way Street

    One Way Street

I wrote this song in my early days as a writer, I found this tucked under some old posts. I’ve redone some lines to my liking.

    (verse one)

I’d been living in the past, trying to hide the pain
Holding on for dear life, crying in the rain
Life was a nightmare, I’d see wide awake
The loneliness and sorrow, was too much to take

Then you came along, became more than just a friend
I’d spend everyday, hoping the day would never end
And while we’d sit, we needn’t say a word
Your eyes were always begging to be heard

    (Chorus)

    I’m going fast, so fast
    Down this one way street
I hope to run into you
I hope you feel it too

    And it feels just right
    Me being here tonight
    I’m falling head over heels
Head over heels, in love with you!

    (verse two)

Would you show me some faith? What I have for you is deep
Make you mine forever, a promise I vow to keep
I finally found the reason, to turn my life around
My ship caught in the storm, has found solid ground

I wish to wake up to your lovely, radiant face
Lose myself in your charm, your cozy, sweet embrace
The more I have of you, the more I want everyday
You’ve become like a drug to me, I just can’t stay away

    (repeat chorus)

Head over heels, in love with you!

  • Finishing touch

    Finishing touch

I watch you brush your hair so gently
With one straight motion, from up to down
With every caress you tease my senses
As I look into your deep blue eyes

You twirl your fingers as you try to make up
    Your mind above everything else
Why, that layer of rouge on your rosy cheeks
A radiant blossom on a winter night

You apply a swish of purple haze
With a glint of glitter on your skin
    Together with the blackest black
Of your eyelashes; so perfectly thin

The reddest red of your lips so moist
Makes me feel like I want to kiss them
    So tempting, playful, fascinating
A dazzling sight for wanting eyes

And as you add another finishing touch
Stroke by stroke; you fail to realize
That beauty’s not defined by what you just made up
But lies in the eyes of the beholder.

  • Listen to the silence

    Listen to the silence

This post, originally written in 2007, feels closer than ever today.

Have you experienced times when you ran out of words? Times when silence did most of the talking? Or Moments when your heart made all the decisions?

Let me assist you in recalling…

That moment when you passed your exams, especially when you knew you were sure to fail in a subject or two. And you did much better than you had expected! When you sit alone in your room after the news sinks in, you get kind of numb, don’t you?

That moment when that girl or boy you have a crush on, smiles at you! You don’t say anything, just smile back! That smile means the world to you. Definitely the beginning of something special.

That moment when you’re parting with an old friend and the train has just started. All you do is wave goodbye and think about when you would meet again. The heart is heavy, but there’s the hope of seeing each other tomorrow.

That moment when you’d applied for a job and are told, “You are through! Congratulations!”

I can go on and on…

Have you thought about why we never say anything during such moments? It’s as if the words are simply understood. The feelings conveyed through our silence. Happiness, agony, frustration, excitement; everything seems crystal clear during these instants.

Can you imagine the importance of a silent moment in a song? When Bryan Adams stops for a while along with music, before he goes on in his husky voice… “Please forgive me… I can’t stop loving you!”

These moments of self-talk are the most important in our lives. Those promises, those decisions. These are the moments which define what we become in life. When was the last time you spoke to yourself? Silently? What does your heart say? Does it accept you for who you are? Or does it ask you to improve? Or ask of you not to give up on something? Or to give something your best shot?

Next time you go silent; listen carefully to what your heart is saying. Listen to its joy, listen to its pain. Listen to its fears; listen to its desires. Don’t make your heart shut up and go off to sleep.

And treasure your precious moments. Every time you do something, every time you are with your loved ones – be it friends, family or that special someone. However small the moment, if it’s special – go on, feel good about it!

  • Feeling the moonlight

    Feeling the moonlight

    I sometimes wonder to myself
Does not the moon get lonely?
To be sitting up there in the night
Looking down, so bright and lovely

He must be looking at our cities
Electric lights, like small stars twinkle
I think he must be getting jealous
    As our fireworks sparkle

And then I see it; the little game
He plays with the clouds, his friends
A childish game of hide and seek
    As tranquility ascends

And there she is! the lovely star
Like a diamond in the sky
She shines so sweetly, bright and young
    The jewel of his eye

The fireworks stop, but the sky still shines
The moon so full and bright
And not one, not two, but a billion stars
They make the black go white!

He’s not alone, he makes it known
    To my wonderful delight
I just sit and take in all the beauty
    While feeling the moonlight.

  • All that matters

    Every once in a while
    Comes a time
When two pairs of eyes meet
    With gazes locked and loaded
And each pair sees their world
In the mirror that is the other pair

    Every once in a while
    Comes a time
    When distance doesn’t matter
    When two hearts speak
    And the silence is pierced
    By two harmonious heartbeats

And the feel of their breath
    On your skin so tantalizing
That you can only find forever
In the comfort of their arms

    So often we say
    That fairy tales are hokum
    Or that it happens only in movies;
    That a true happy ending
    Is always elusive
Even to those who seek it dearly

But then why does it happen
That every once in a while
    The heart stops just for a moment;
The mind spins ever so slightly
And the sudden rush of blood
Makes you feel like you’re falling
    Head over heels

    Every once in a while
    Comes a time
    When distance doesn’t matter
    And all time stands still
    When something just clicks
    And all that matters
Is the love in the air.

  • A place for two

This used to be a place for two
Where I’d sit and look into your deep blue eyes
And seem to lose track of all time

    Where conversation had new meaning
We’d roam the depths of life together
Hand in hand, day by day
Where I’d hear your voice right next to me
And lay eyes upon your face
While watching your expression as you watched mine

Where I’d rest my eyes upon your wonderful smile
That curve that sets a lot of things straight
And melts my heart like a hot knife through butter

And where even silence had substance
Where our eyes did the talking
And ears could hear only the sound of soft breaths
And the occasional sigh of love

But where did it all change?
Where did it all go wrong?
For now I only see myself
Looking back at me, in the gleaming glass
On the face of my phone, waiting, wishing
If I’d only hear your voice once again
But instead I hear annoying beeps
Or pings, or dreary tones banal
Those keep me awake at night

The heart longs for human touch
But all it gets is steel, plastic and glass
    And the waiting, the anticipation
That something will happen; might happen
    The mind is hopeful
    The heart filled with desire

And finally, it beeps! This lifeless contraption
    Has finally come alive
You send me your picture; my hearts sings with joy
I know it’s just a picture, but it warms me inside
I finally see you; oh how long I have waited
To gaze again into those deep blue eyes
My eyes can’t get enough of you
Of your face, your radiant beauty
Until all I can see is my own reflection
    As the back light dies
Just like the battery is about to.

We were supposed to be closer
With technology, connected at all times
Then why does it feel different; alone,
All alone in this place for two.

  • Getting started

One look was simply not enough; he had to look at her once more
For the beauty that sat at the other side, was one he’d never seen before

He didn’t know just how and when, he’d get another chance
He felt his young heart skip a beat, when he tried to sneak a glance

She looked along in his direction, and found his gaze collide
She felt a shiver through her body, a spark she couldn’t hide

She tried to speak; no words came out, she seemed to lose her voice
And in that moment passing by, their eyes had made a choice

This is how their journey began, light-headed and wholehearted
Their fleeting gaze so magical; their love’s just getting started.

He still looks at her that very way, though both of them are older
For he knows, that beauty lies, in the eyes of the beholder

His eyes are dim, his teeth are bare, and he’s weaker in the knees
And her hair so gray, so graceful, simply flying in the breeze

She knows that he’s the only man, who can love her most of all
And he knows he’s made the right choice, no more in love he could fall

They sit together quietly, not reminiscing the past
They know that there aren’t many days, left for them to last

And yet they sit there, engrossed, light-headed and wholehearted
Their fleeting gaze still magical; their love’s still getting started.

  • A cup of coffee

    A cup of coffee

    I can’t help but watch
While you’re sitting there sipping your coffee
Innocently you brush your hair aside
And unravel the beauty that is your face

    My eye catches yours
But I cannot hold your gaze
    Because looking in your eyes
    Makes me weak

You let off a wry smile, gentle, almost mischievous
As if you’re trying to provoke me
That smile of yours pushes me off the edge
And makes me want to kiss those lips

But I control myself; not here, not now.
You sense my dilemma. You lean forward
    Pick up your cup, and take a sip;
    Savoring the taste.

I now wish I were that cup of coffee
The one you were so gently holding
And kissing just a moment ago.
I’ve lost all track of time.

    You’ve just made a memory
    I can’t forget.
No matter what I try and do
My mind just keeps coming to you.

    And you’ve made me realize
That it doesn’t take a grand gesture
But just that little thing you did
That made me fall in love with you.
